Living in Wilson has several perks, chief among them being exclusive access to the comfort and ease of Greenlight Community Broadband. Greenlight Community Broadband is community-owned and has been offering local fiber-to-your-home and business services, citywide and in several other Wilson County locations, since 2008.

Built By Wilson, For Wilson

The City of Wilson opted to build and launch their own municipal fiber-to-home network. Building their own network gave the city a competitive digital infrastructure, and Greenlight Community Broadband became the first community-owned gigabit network in North Carolina.

Building the network was considered essential for economic development in the area and for keeping key local employers in the city. The benefits, however, also extended to Wilson homes.  Greenlight Community Broadband further expanded its service beyond city limits by entering rural areas of the county.

In fact, according to the Institute for Local Self-Reliance (ILSR), the Wilson, NC, internet project has saved the community millions, while improving costs and services for businesses and residents alike.

The Community-Owned Difference

How does Greenlight Community Broadband's community-owned fiber-optic internet make a difference?

Local Jobs

Unlike representatives, installers, technicians, and other employees of large internet or telecommunications companies, Greenlight’s employees are local. They aren't working in a big city, a different state, or another country. They are your friends, family, and neighbors.

Civic Investment

When you choose internet service through Greenlight, you choose to support the city where you live. Your dollars are invested in shared community assets to improve local quality of life, increase community resilience, and support the overall public good, rather than supporting a massive, outside telecom conglomerate.

Better Customer Service

By using and investing in your local, community-owned internet service, you don't have to worry about long phone hold times when calling about an issue. Customer service is local and may just be handled by a friend or acquaintance rather than some unconcerned stranger. The pride we have in being a local community-owned internet extends well into our customer service department.

Better Connection

Greenlight's internet is connected directly to your business or home; it is more reliable and has fewer issues than a fiber connection that has to travel a long distance. As a fiber network, our upload and download speeds reach up to 8 Gig, making it better for hosting video calls or uploading large files without interruption, in addition to watching movies and TV shows without lag.

Pioneering the Gigabit Economy

With more than 10,000 customers, Wilson is known as North Carolina's first Gigabit city. Offering gigabit speeds to local businesses and residents, Greenlight Community Broadband is driving local economic growth and supporting local innovation.

Greenlight's network passes through every business and home in the City of Wilson, making access easy. Greenlight Community Broadband continues to expand its service in many rural locations across Wilson County. Through Greenlight, Wilson has become a recognized tech-focused innovation hub.
